What exactly is Female genital mutilation (FGM)?
FGM (as it is often known) is a procedure where a Girl or Woman’s genitals are deliberately injured, cut or changed with no valid medical intent. It is also called female circumcision or simply cutting.Other terms are used, such as megrez, gudniin, halalays, sunna, tahur, megrez and khitan. But the effect is the same.
FGM is usually carried out on young girls between infancy and the age of 15. It is most enacted before puberty begins.
FGM is illegal in the Switzerland and most European countries and is considered a form of child abuse.
It is also extremely traumatic, painful and can seriously harm the physical and mental health of women and girls.
FGM can also cause long-term problems with sex, childbirth, and result in a host of mental health conditions.
What are the different types of FGM?
There are 4 main types of FGM:Type1
Clitoridectomy
Removing part or all the clitoris.
Type 2
Excision.
removing part or all the clitoris and the inner labia (the lips that surround the vagina). With or without removal of the labia majora (the larger outer lips)
Type 3
Infibulation.
A narrowing the vaginal opening by creating a seal, formed by cutting and repositioning the labia causing them to heal forming a much smaller opening.
Type 4
Other Harmful.

FGM is often performed by traditional circumcisers or cutters who have no real medical training.
But in some countries, it may even be done by a medical professional.
Anaesthetics and antiseptics are not generally used, and FGM is often carried out using knives, scissors, scalpels, pieces of glass or razor blades.
FGM often happens against a girl's will without her consent or fore knowledge. And many girls may have to be forcibly restrained. .
